The Legend of Karataş

150 years ago a fisherman called Panayot and his wife Eleni were living in a village named Küçükdeniz. Although they had no children, they were very happy. Panayot used to wake up early and go fishing. When the evening came, he sold the fish and went to a café to meet other fishermen. When he returned home, he never forgot to drink a plum spirit. Every Sunday he used to take his wife to a small church and pray.

A fisherman called Hüseyin and his wife Hatice were living in a village named Büyükdeniz. Hüseyin was a religious person. Every Friday he used to go to the mosque and pray. He also used to go fishing and visit café every day. If the weather was bad, he used to repair his nets and tell the old legends together with other fishermen. Hüseyin and his wife were also dreaming about children.

Panayot and Hüseyin knew each other but they were not such close friends to visit each other. One day they were fishing close to the Orak Island and they wished luck to each other. In the evening the weather has changed suddenly. They picked their nets and moved back towards Foca. But the Panayot’s boat started to sweep on the rough sea. When Hüseyin saw it, he returned back to help him. They bound Panayot’s boat to Hüseyin’s, retuned back and went together to the fishermen’ café in the Küçükdeniz. They drank tea together and offered cigarettes to each other. After that day they became good friends and started visiting each other.

Six-seven months later Panayot told Hüseyin that his wife was pregnant. In the same evening, when Hüseyin told this to his wife Hatice, she told him she was pregnant as well. They were very excited as the birth of their children was coming closer. Finally their children were born with a one day difference. The name of the Hüseyin’s son was Talasa and Panayot’s daughter’s name was Deniz. Talas means the same as Deniz - sea. As both friends were very impressed by this coincidence Hüseyin started calling his son Migola Talasa – “wide sea” and Panayot started calling his daughter Mikro Talasa – “small sea”.

Many years have passed, children grew up and started living a secret love. When the fathers went fishing children were sitting in the place which is now called “Köprübaşı”. There is a small stream flowing through this place and there was a black stone – “Karataş” in that place as well. Finally one day they told their families about their love and decision to get married. Both Hüseyin and Panayot were so surprised that they did not know what to say. At the end they let children to get engaged.

Talasa did not see the future in the fishery. He went to Izmir to earn money and Deniz was waiting for him. Years have passed but Talasa did not return back. Deniz used to sit on the “Karataş” every day and dream. One day she got very sick and as she was lying in the bed her soul left Foca.

After that day the story of the love between Talasa and Deniz was retold many times. Panayot and Hüseyin fixed the place where the Karataş was lying. Their wish was that who ever coincidentally steps on the Makro Petra- Karataş while going to Foca should become bound to Foca with a strong bound.

And after that day, many people came and left Foca, but their hearts are beating for Foca.
